Back in the Studio, Soon. What should we record?
So we’re hoping to make it back into the studio again in the next month or so. Only 3 current band members are on our last album, so I think it’s time to capture the new sound. I think we’ll start by recording 1-3 new songs. The question is–what should we record? Feel free to let us know your suggestions, and we’ll try to lay out more details–here are a few possibilities:
Lost Love (50s sounding)
MacGuilard (Country tune we debuted at the Double Door)
Run (Uptempo Bluegrass)
Go Momma (Rick’s tune)
Thoughts on Last Night’s Show
Thanks to everyone who made it out last night–pretty formidable crowd on a Wednesday. We really appreciated it. Here are a few thoughts:
1. We debuted a new song (MacGuilard), and I think it went pretty well, considering a) that was our first time playing it with all of the band members in the same room, and b) due to conflicting set lists, half of us weren’t expecting to play it that early in the night.
2. Rick picked up a pick-up for pickin his banjo (there’s your new speech-training device). Good purchase Rick! We can hear you better, and you can now move during shows.
3. For the first time in a while, I was set-up next to Jay. It was dangerous. My face almost melted from his guitar solos.
NEXT SHOW: July 3rd – Americana Holiday Blowout with The Giving Tree Band at Cubby Bear.
Double Door Tomorrow, 9pm
This will be our last full band show for awhile, so you should come! There should be some dancing as well.

We’ll be playing half the set without drums. The rest of the set we’ll have our former drummer, Tim Good, join us (he’s the drummer on the album). Tim’s band The August is following.

Free MP3 – Anchor
In honor of our upcoming shows, we’re giving away more music!
Anchor was one of the first songs Julia ever wrote. I think the lyrics are pretty self-explanatory. It was recorded in my living room during a 3-hour session that produced our first EP. Months later I overdubbed the String Bass and accordion, and Liza Day overdubbed the backup vocals at Charlie Mammoser’s apartment.
We were on XRT on Sunday – download the track!
Richard Milne of 93.1 XRT played “Wedding Song” on Sunday night, as part of Local Anesthetic, a program showcasing Chicago music from the past 50 years. He played “Wedding Song.”

Free MP3 – Leave it There
In honor of our show tomorrow at Lincoln Hall, we’re giving away one of our most popular songs, which has been our opening song at just about every show.
Charles Tindley was a janitor who went on to become a preacher and the godfather of gospel music. One day a woman who was a constant worrier sought his counsel. Tindley suggested she “put all of her worries in a big sack, give that sack to the Lord and leave it there.”
I took the lyrics and made the first modification of the melody. Leave it There debuted as an up tempo country tune. Julia modified the melody even more and suggested we halve the tempo, giving it a more gentle feel. Lucky for us the song is public domain (!)
Leave it There was recorded in my living room during a 3-hour session that produced our first EP. Months later I overdubbed the String Bass and accordion, and Liza Day overdubbed the backup vocals at Charlie Mammoser’s apartment.
Download Leave it There here. Feel free to give us your feedback on the song.
